Learning with Food – Bring Books to Life with Yummy Food!

As a mom to 3 boys, I’ve learned the importance of bringing learning to life and making it fun. Thankfully, I found some like-minded families several years ago when we formed our first Book Club. Given that our Book Club was predominantly made of boys, and we wanted them to enjoy classic literature, we knew we had to find a way to get them excited about it. What we did figure out was that one way to reel them in to thoroughly enjoy reading classic literature was to tie in yummy “themed” treats! Learning with food is a fun way to help bring books to life.

For each book we select, we spend a lot of time thinking of and researching appropriately themed recipes for the kids to enjoy. The process has been a lot of fun and full of trial and error. Most recipes have been real hits (pretty much anything with sugar in it!). Of course, there are those few that just didn’t work out and thus didn’t “make the cut” to be included in the World Study Guide. Thankfully our boys are real troopers and have so far accommodated our endeavours!

So, how can you use our World Study Guide Recipes and Great Taste Test? Here are our suggestions based on personal experience:

  • Some of the recipes lend themselves well to a group activity. For example, when we read The Jungle Book, we all made the “Snakes on a Stick” as a group. We just made sure to have enough ingredients for each child to make their own (or 2) “snakes”, placed them on parchment paper with their name written on it and baked accordingly.

  • The Great Taste Test is a simple way for your child to document their experience with each new recipe. Our boys love filling out this component of the World Study Guide, sharing if they liked a recipe or not, what flavors they tasted most (you can get some interesting answers to this one) and if they want to learn to make it themselves!

  • If you are doing a World Study Guide with more than one child, The Great Taste test is always a wonderful way to include some basic math. For example, help the group with averages and/or graphing to determine the favorites (and least favorites) for each Guide.
  • Lastly, if you plan a celebration to wrap up your study, use the included recipes as part of your celebration! Check out our earlier post Celebrate with a Very Merry Unbirthday Party for an example.
