This month’s Poppins Book Nook theme is near and dear to this mom of all boys: pirates! I had no trouble deciding on a book, as I just knew they’d love to explore Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island. My oldest thoroughly enjoyed Treasure Island when we did it with our Book Club co-op several years ago, so I just knew the twins would love it too!
Make sure to read all the way through for your chance to win the Poppins Book Nook Pirate Plunder Giveaway!
First, since the twins are only 8, I chose to use the Classic Starts abridged version of Treasure Island. Classic Starts is perhaps my favorite collection of abridged books for classic literature. Overall, they stay true to the original novel, while ensuring it is appropriate for younger readers. The twins are able to read Classic Starts on their own, with occasional help with vocabulary. However they still prefer that I read the story aloud to them.
After reading the book, we did several fun activities from our World Study Guide for Treasure Island. We always love to bring books to life with yummy food, so we first made basic hardtack. I honestly did not expect everyone to like this, but they all loved it!
Hardtack (or hard tack) is a simple type of cracker or biscuit, made from flour, water, and sometimes salt. Inexpensive and long-lasting, it was and is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods, commonly during long sea voyages and military campaigns. The name derives from the British sailor slang for food, “tack”. It is known by other names such as pilot bread (as rations for ship’s pilots), ship’s biscuit, shipbiscuit, sea biscuit, sea bread (as rations for sailors) or pejoratively “dog biscuits,” “tooth dullers,” “sheet iron,” “worm castles” or “molar breakers”. — www.wikipedia.com
There are several other yummy recipes to try in the World Study Guide for Treasure Island, which we definitely will be doing soon (did I mention how much my boys love FOOD?!)
We completed several of the notebooking pages from the World Study Guide. One of the twins’ favorite pages was learning how to speak like a pirate! After learning more about pirate lingo and the influence Treasure Island had on our perception of how pirates talked, they then went around the house talking to each other like pirates.
We learned about nautical navigation and how pirates used heavenly bodies and tools from their time to successfully navigate the seas. Then, we created our very our quadrant!
quadrant – an instrument, usually containing a graduated arc of 90°, used in astronomy, navigation, etc., for measuring altitudes
The twins had so much fun exploring Treasure Island as part of this month’s Poppins Book Nook theme of pirates! Treasure Island is a true classic story of pirates, sure to be enjoyed by the entire family. Be sure to incorporate our Treasure Island World Study Guide for even more hands-on learning fun, recipes and notebooking pages!
