For many years now our families have co-hosted a Book Club for our kids. When the twins were preschool age, I led a special Book Club for the little ones while Susan led the older kids with more age appropriate books. One of my twin boys’ all time favorite books from this time is Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business, by Esphyr Slobodkina. Today I’m sharing with you some of the fun activities we did and a Caps for Sale FREE Printable!

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business was written in 1938 by Esphyr Slobodkina. Slobodkina, a native of Russia, has 24 published children’s books and Caps for Sale is her most well-known work. The story begins with a peddler of caps, who has a very peculiar way of carrying the caps he sells — he wears them all in a stack on his head! One day, he stops to take a nap under a tree, unaware of all the “monkey business” about to happen.

After reading the story aloud to the kids (and a lot of giggling!), the children took turns stacking caps on their head. They attempted to keep them balanced as they walked around … of course more giggling ensued!

I created a color by number sheet of a monkey in a tree that all the kids loved. We were studying Spanish color words at the time, so I created a Spanish version to reinforce our learning. I’m sharing both the English and Spanish version in the FREE printable today (download link at the end of this post)!

Lastly, we had fun with the –AP word family. We read Word Family Tales: A Nap for Zap (-ap) by Kama Einhorn and then I gave each child a set of –AP Word Family Puzzle Cards I had created.

Caps for Sale: A Tale of a Peddler, Some Monkeys and Their Monkey Business is a fun classic that my boys still love to this day. In fact, just last week one of my twins (who’s now 8) brought it out to read for his free reading. Make sure you download our Caps for Sale FREE Printable to make your own memories with this treasured classic!

I am the proud mama to 3 incredible boys. Our family began our homeschooling journey in 2006 when my oldest was in 2nd grade and the twins were barely 6 months old. I’m passionate about researching resources and activities that allow my children to use all of their senses and learning styles.
