Swiss Family Robinson was written by Johann David Wyss, a Swiss pastor, husband and father of four sons. When his children were young he would tell them stories to help teach moral lessons. He often told his children the story of the Swiss Family Robinson — a story based on the classic story Robinson Crusoe. Many years later Johann Rudolf Wyss (Johann David Wyss’ son) asked his father for permission to publish the story of the Swiss Family Robinson that he had enjoyed so much as a child. Johann Rudolf Wyss was a professor of philosophy at Bern (Switzerland) and the author of the Swiss national anthem.

What I love about classic literature is that you can typically find an abridged version to enjoy with the younger children of your family. So while my 14-year old read the original, unabridged version (Puffin Classics), my 8-year old twins enjoyed the Classics Starts adaptation. After reading the story, we then watched the 1960s classic Swiss Family Robinson from the Walt Disney Vault collection.

I mentioned earlier that we “revisited” Swiss Family Robinson. We originally read this wonderful story as part of our Book Club Co-op several years ago. In fact, this was one of the original books that inspired us to share our work via our World Study Guides! The end result was our World Study Guide for Swiss Family Robinson. Here are some of the fun activities our Book Club did when we originally read Swiss Family Robinson:

Being stranded on a deserted island forced the Swiss Family Robinson to learn to live off of the land. They found and grew many plants, including cassava, cotton, guava, pineapple, potato, sugar cane and more. We decided to let the kids plant some easy to grow vegetables and track their progress using a plant journal. Download our FREE Printable My Plant Journal today and start your very own garden as you enjoy Johann David Wyss’s Swiss Family Robinson!

I am the proud mama to 3 incredible boys. Our family began our homeschooling journey in 2006 when my oldest was in 2nd grade and the twins were barely 6 months old. I’m passionate about researching resources and activities that allow my children to use all of their senses and learning styles.

Robinson Crusoe is still one of my all time favourite books. I remember reading it over and over again when I was in high school. Thanks for sharing

I’ve always wanted to try geocaching! I think my boys would really enjoy it. Definitely something to add to my “must do” list. :-)

Oooo … I’ve never seen Swiss Family Robinson as a play! I bet that was fun (both for her and to watch!).

That’s awesome! There’s so much to learn from nature. Unfortunately here in Florida, we don’t spend as much time outdoors during the summer months … it’s just too hot! 😛

We like to use our imaginations. We have woods behind our house and the children are always making a house out of limbs, chasing dragons or hiding out.

I love the plant journal! This is fantastic and will be fun to do with my kids.

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
