We have enjoyed learning about Paris as we read “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”.  Although we will not have a chance to visit the “City of Light” as part of our studies we have found several activities for studying Notre Dame Cathedral at home.

Activities for Studying Notre Dame Cathedral

Here are a few of the resources we have found to be particularly helpful and interesting –

One of the pieces in our World Study Guide for The Hunchback of Notre Dame focuses on the Notre Dame de Paris (Notre Dame Cathedral).  There is no better site available to learn about this historic landmark than the official website for Cathedrale Notre Dame de Paris.

With this site you can appreciate the history, art and architecture of this cathedral as well as the day-to-day activities that take place within the walls of this active place of worship.

We have viewed many beautiful photos of the cathedral, but earlier this week we decided to take our learning to a different level by building a Notre Dame of Paris 3D Puzzle .  My sons love to build airplane models and Lego sets so this challenge was perfect for them!  It has been very interesting to look at so many beautiful photos of Notre Dame, but it was amazing how our appreciation for the detail of the architecture grew when they were able to view a 3-D model.  They really enjoyed building this puzzle (it took us about an hour to build it) and we would highly recommend it — the quality is nice and are excited to add it to the decor in our home schoolroom.

One of architectural elements we enjoyed learning about are the gargoyles that line the roof lines of Notre Dame.  The creativity and legends they represent have been interesting to explore.  Here is a basic coloring page for gargoyles you may find helpful.  And, here are some additional coloring pages for the overall architecture of Notre Dame.

Au revoir for now!

As a veteran educator I am always looking for new ways to bring learning to life for my family. I enjoy traveling, sharing ideas with other moms, and helping my children explore the world around them. Our favorite subjects to study together are history, literature and geography.
