For this month’s Poppins Book Nook theme of “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!”, the twins and I explored  Christopher Maynard’s I Wonder Why Planes Have Wings: and other questions about transportation. If you’re looking for lots of fun, educational tidbits about transportation from everyday walking to planes, trains and automobiles, then this is the book for you. Today I’m sharing with you some of the neat features of this book, along with a FREE printable to guide your transportation learning journey!

Make sure to read all the way through to download your FREE printable and for your chance to enter to win this month’s giveaway!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles!

I Wonder Why Planes Have Wings: and other questions about transportation is published by Kingfisher and part of the “I Wonder Why Series” of books. The information is presented in fun, informative tidbits, just right for the younger elementary crowd. Here are just a few of the many questions that are answered with this book:

  • How far can I go in an hour?
  • What is the fastest car / boat / plane?
  • Why do planes have wings?
  • Why do hot-air balloons float?
  • Which boats have wheels?
  • What happens inside car engines?
  • Who cycled over the sea?
  • How many people can ride on a bike?
  • What is the largest human motorcycle pyramid?
  • Why don’t ships sink?
  • How do submarines sink?
  • Why don’t trains fall off the rails?
  • Which plane hitches a ride?
  • and many more!

As I was reading the book, one of my twins reminded me that there were a couple of videos from The Magic School Bus about transportation. So, as soon as we finished reading, he turned on Netflix so we could watch The Magic School Bus: Takes Flight and The Magic School Bus: Revving Up. In The Magic School Bus: Takes Flight, you learn all about aerodynamics and how things fly, while in The Magic School Bus: Revving Up you learn how an engine works.

I am the proud mama to 3 incredible boys. Our family began our homeschooling journey in 2006 when my oldest was in 2nd grade and the twins were barely 6 months old. I’m passionate about researching resources and activities that allow my children to use all of their senses and learning styles.

We stumbled across the “I Wonder Why” series when the twins were in K and we were learning about horses (“I Wonder Why Horses Wear Shoes”). It’s a fun, kid-friendly, fact-filled series. Thanks for stopping by! :-)

I just hopped over to check out their site. My kids would love I Wonder Why the Pyramids Were Built.
I had never heard of this series before but I know we would love it!

Thank you for helping to bring a spoonful of reading fun to the Poppins Book Nook this month!
